Beaches Fine Arts: Imani Winds

More than North America’s premier wind quintet, Imani Winds has established itself as one of the most successful chamber music ensembles in the United States. Since 1997, the Grammy nominated quintet has taken a unique path, carving out a distinct presence in the classical music world with its dynamic playing, culturally poignant programming, adventurous collaborations, and inspirational outreach programs. With two member composers and a deep commitment to commissioning new work, the group is enriching the traditional wind quintet repertoire while meaningfully bridging European, American, African and Latin American traditions.

Philip Pan and Rhonda Cassano, both from the Jacksonville Symphony, are back to lead our annual concert of lovely Baroque chamber music. This year's concert will feature Bach's wonderful Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 as well as other instrumental favorites. This concert is free and open to the public, so please come and join us. The varying moods of their program range from the lyricism of Louis Cahuzac's 'Cantilène' and Maurice Saylor's 'Romanza', to jaunty movements from Hindemith's Clarinet Sonata, and the dancing rhythms of both Victor Babin's 'Hillandale Waltzes' and James M. David's 'Historias y Danzas'. Please join us!

As a special Valentine's Day treat, Jacksonville Public Library will present a free Intermezzo Concert featuring Cliff Newton, who retired from the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra after 32 years as Principal Trumpet. Joining him are his wife, Jacksonville Symphony violinist Glynda Newton, Dr. Bill Prince (winds), Bob Gauger (trombone), Bonita Sonsini Wyke (piano), Dennis Hunsicker (accordion) and Thomas P. "Pat" Brown (percussion). Their varied program ranges from concert selections by Hindemith, Hovhaness and Shostakovich to pieces inspired by Latin American dances by Milhaud and Piazzolla, further spiced with a little Louis Armstrong.
