Handel’s Messiah

The performing of Handel’s Messiah has become a beloved tradition around Christmas time. This free concert will feature the Chamber Singers from the University of North Florida, a small, auditioned group of college students led by Dr. Cara Tasher, accompanied the Lawson Ensemble. In addition to the Christmas section, the choir will perform excerpts from the Passion and Resurrection sections as well, offering a more complete Messiah.

Johnandrew Slominski, piano

A child prodigy, Slominski gave his first public performance at age 5, won his first piano competition at age 6, and entered college at age 15. By age 21, Slominski had earned three degrees from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, including a Master of Music in Performance and Literature, a Master of Arts in Pedagogy of Music Theory, and a Bachelor of Music in Performance; his first professorship followed two years later. He was unanimously nominated for (and received) Eastman's coveted Performer's Certificate in recognition of outstanding concert artistry--the youngest individual to have received such an honor. One of our most beautiful liturgies, Evensong is a lovely, sung, evening service led by the choir in which we thank God for the day that has passed and ask for peace and protection during the night ahead. Join us on this special day as we celebrate all the saints in our lives, those that have gone on before us and those in our midst now, during this brief service and immediately afterwards stay for a potluck in Leatherbury Hall. UNF faculty artist GARY SMART is a composer, classical and jazz pianist, and teacher, and may be the only pianist to have studied with Yale scholar/keyboardist Ralph Kirkpatrick, the great Cuban virtuoso Jorge Bolet, and the master jazz pianist Oscar Peterson. Joining Dr. Smart is violinist MIDORI KUGOTA, a visiting Professor from Kyoto City University of Arts and member of the Japan String Quartet. Affectionately known as, “Johnny the Claw,” he also teaches bass & guitar privately, is involved with numerous recording projects, and is a member of the worship band at Ponte Vedra Presbyterian Church and former Music Director at Jacksonville Anglican Fellowship (The Ship). St. Augustine Music Festival 10th Season
Presented FREE to audiences of all ages, features musicians from the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra joined by internationally renowned artists presenting a variety of classical compositions in the historic Cathedral Basilica located in picturesque St. Augustine, Florida. Now in its 10th year, the event is garnering national attention as the largest free classical music festival in the USA, attracting more than 5000 attendees over two weekends. The festival provides the opportunity for new and avid concert goers to appreciate live classical music of the highest quality in the Cathedral’s uplifting setting.

Voice is a London-based, female a cappella trio performing repertoire spanning both ages and continents. As a special Valentine's Day treat, Jacksonville Public Library will present a free Intermezzo Concert featuring Cliff Newton, who retired from the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra after 32 years as Principal Trumpet. Joining him are his wife, Jacksonville Symphony violinist Glynda Newton, Dr. Bill Prince (winds), Bob Gauger (trombone), Bonita Sonsini Wyke (piano), Dennis Hunsicker (accordion) and Thomas P. "Pat" Brown (percussion). Their varied program ranges from concert selections by Hindemith, Hovhaness and Shostakovich to pieces inspired by Latin American dances by Milhaud and Piazzolla, further spiced with a little Louis Armstrong.
